Manufacturing processes for components of an four stroke jet ski engine have evolved through the years so that such engine components can meet ever increasing performance requirements, e.g., increased stress tolerances and the like. These manufacturing processes have made the four stroke PWC engine more reliable and efficient; however, current manufacturing processes require additional steps or processes to add wear resistance properties to specific components of the internal combustion engine such as, for example, the camshaft of the internal combustion engine and more specifically the lobe regions of the camshaft. By providing added wear resistant properties to the camshaft, the internal combustion engine would be even more efficient than which is currently possible. Each camshaft goes through a rigorous quality control process to ensure that the lobes and other ground surfaces meet specification. These performance oriented 4 Stroke pistons are considered by many mechanics to be the best on the market. Precision forged and CNC ground, they offer tight tolerances and great performance. They are also available in various oversizes for engine rebuilding. The jet ski connecting rod is under tremendous stress from the reciprocating load represented by the piston, actually stretching and relaxing with every rotation, and the load increases rapidly with increasing engine speed. Failure of a connecting rod, usually called "throwing a rod" is one of the most common causes of catastrophic PWC engine failure, frequently putting the broken rod through the side of the crankcase and thereby rendering the engine irreparable. It can result from fatigue near a physical defect in the rod, lubrication failure in a bearing due to faulty maintenance, or from failure of the rod bolts from a defect, improper tightening, or re-use of already used (stressed) bolts where not recommended.
